FRANKENSTEIN: What does it mean to create? A kids DROP-IN activity

Join us for a Frankenstein-themed storytime and activity hour! This hands-on drop-in program is designed specifically for younger mad scientists to engage with questions of invention and creation. 

FREE with Museum Admission

Who: Children Ages 4 and Up (Recommended) 

When: October 31, 2026 
Time: 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM 
Where: Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation 

Activities: 

  • Franken-storytime: Read-aloud of Frankenstein-themed books for young readers. 

  • It’s Alive!: Create your own monsters with a piece-by-piece papercraft activity or coloring sheet. 

  • Mad Machines: Discover how historical industrial breakthroughs paved the way for modern-day innovations in a demonstration of our machine shop. 

  • Candy Hunters: Complete a quick scavenger hunt to receive a candy bag. 

  • Fire Engine Photo Op: Take photos on Waltham’s original 1871 steam pumper fire engine! 

This program is costume optional, so come as dressed up or down as you want. Kids should plan to come with an accompanying adult, and we hope to see you there!

As part of International Museums Weekend, amateur radio operators Eric Pfeifer (NJUR) and Shannon Gibney (KC10HT) will operate the historic W1BB callsign from the Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation in Waltham, Massachusetts.

Join us for a high-flying adventure where history meets modern technology! This hands-on program is designed specifically for young innovators ready to master the skies.

Program Details

  • Who: Children Ages 9 and Up

  • When: April 24, 2026

  • Time: 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM

  • Where: Charles River Museum of Industry and Innovation

  • Activities:

    • Drone Piloting: Learn the basics of flight and take the controls of a drone.

    • Aero-Design: Use engineering principles to design, make, and fly your own custom paper airplanes.

    • Innovation Challenges: Discover how historical industrial breakthroughs paved the way for modern aviation.

  • Parking: Free street parking and nearby paid lots/garages are available.

Families are encouraged to drop in over the course of the week to check in on the progress of the machine as it is being built, with its ultimate goal of completing a single task.

The machine will be set into motion ahead of Zach’s Mill Talk on Friday, April 3 at 7:00 PM. All attending will be able to watch it go!
