Volunteering at the Charles River Collaboratory
Interested in volunteering to work with the Charles River Collaboratory? It’s a very different experience from the rest of the Museum, but holds the possibility for just as much fulfillment and personal satisfaction!
We’re currently looking for assistance in two basic roles:
Role 1: Workshop Facilitation
Primary Responsibilities and Projects: This volunteer will train as a Collaboratory presenter and lead public and school workshops, developing the skills to bring the Collaboratory's machines to life for visitors. They will plan or lead pre-planned workshops. They will also facilitate youth leadership and peer mentoring in STEM through our student innovation space.
Expected Accomplishments: By the end of the workshop or series of workshops, the volunteer will have produced materials such as training slides, handouts, and activities. They will also gain direct public-facing experience through leading and facilitating educational programming.
Desired Skills and Fit: This position is a great fit for people interested in museums, education, and community outreach. Strong written and verbal communication skills are preferred.
Schedule: Occasional early evening or weekend commitments may be expected. The Museum is open to the public Wednesdays-Saturdays, 10 AM - 3 PM, with staff in on Tuesdays as well. The specific hours and days on site can be adjusted to account for workshop schedules. We are a very short walk from the Waltham Commuter Rail stop, bus lines, and the Moody Street stop of the Brandeis van.
Role 2: Open Hours Supervision
Primary Responsibilities and Projects: This volunteer will train as a Collaboratory supervisor and serve as backup to the youth leaders during open hours. Open hours are when the collaboratory is open to the public and anyone can drop in to learn/use the machines.
